Posted: 03/19/2013
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – At the conclusion of the winter sports season Lehigh stands in third place in the Presidents’ Cup standings with 61.25 points overall, the Patriot League announced Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks trail Bucknell and Navy, who are tied for the top spot with 68 points. Colgate and Army are within 0.75 points of each other for fourth and fifth place, respectively, followed by American, Lafayette and Holy Cross.

Lehigh’s men’s teams are holding on to first place with a 32-31 lead over Bucknell despite the Bison’s men’s basketball team winning the Patriot League crown. The Mountain Hawks men’s basketball team tied for second in the Patriot League regular season and bowed in the Patriot League semifinals. Lehigh will face Wyoming in the CBI on Tuesday night. Both the men’s swimming and diving and indoor track and field teams finished in fourth place in the Patriot League Championships. Navy, Army, American, Colgate and Lafayette are all within 2.5 points of each other for spots three through seven with Holy Cross at the bottom.

The Brown and White sit in fifth place overall on the women’s side, owning 29.25 points. Navy is in first place followed by Bucknell, Colgate and Army ahead of Lehigh. Lehigh’s women’s basketball team finished fifth in the regular season standings. The women’s swimming and diving team finished the Patriot League Championships in fifth place, while women’s track and field took third. American, Holy Cross and Lafayette occupy the bottom three spots on the women’s table.

Presidents’ Cup points are based on a team’s performance in the regular season and postseason. The final standings will be decided by 11 spring sports; men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, and women’s rowing.

Lehigh has yet to capture the overall Presidents’ Cup, but the Mountain Hawks are coming off a second place finish overall in 2012, their highest rank in the standings in 11 years. Lehigh won last year’s men’s President’s Cup for the fourth time overall and the first time since 2006.
