BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh returned to the court for the first time in two weeks, but the Mountain Hawks dropped a tightly contested match to UConn, 4-3, Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks dropped the doubles point and could only muster three singles wins as they fall to 1-3 on the season.
In doubles action, senior John Nespoli and freshman Troy List teamed to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, but the visiting Huskies won at second doubles. In the deciding third doubles match Lehigh’s team of senior Brent Herbert and freshman Chris Collins was edged 9-8 by UConn’s Tom Cook and Andrew Marcus.
Lehigh needed four singles wins for the come-from-behind victory, and won the first three flights, with Nespoli, List and junior Mike Gordon winning in straight sets; however, UConn won the bottom three flights, including a three-set win from Christian Malerba over sophomore John Bolcar 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.
Saturday’s scheduled match with Maryland Eastern-Shore was cancelled when the Hawks were unable to make the trip.
