BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up a busy weekend in the pool with a meet against Vermont Sunday afternoon at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks started strong, capturing the first two events, but could only muster one more win the rest of the way as the Catamounts came away with a 149-92 victory.
“We got off to a strong start, out-touching them for first and third in the medley relay, and then finishing 1-2 in the 1000 free, “said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “The energy was up after a long day yesterday against Rider and Penn, and even after Vermont took the lead we stuck together. It was good to see that even though we fell a little short, we did not give up in battle, and proved we could compete with a scholarship program.
After the day began with diving, Lehigh captured the first two swimming events. Event one was the 400 medley relay, with sophomore Laura Eull, junior Melanie Rolish, sophomore Julie Sicherman and freshman Kristen Keenan out-touching a team from Vermont by nine-hundredths of a second, in winning with a time of 4:02.91. The next event was the 1000 free, and the Mountain Hawks posted the top two finishers in freshman Lauren Kindrick (10:44.10) and sophomore Allison Rolish (10:46.21)
Vermont won all but one event from that point on, with Melanie Rolish winning the 200 breast in 2:27.29.
The Mountain Hawks (0-7) will try again for their first dual meet win on Friday when the complete Lehigh squad hosts archrival Lafayette. The meet will get underway with diving action at 3:30 p.m. from Jacobs Pool.
