PHILADELPHIA – The Mountain Hawks won their final non-conference game of the year Tuesday afternoon, with a 3-0 win over Philadelphia University. Freshman Matt Thaeder scored the game winner in the 22nd minute to give Lehigh the advantage. The Brown and White improve to 7-7-2 while the Rams fall to 3-12-2.
Thaeder started the scoring with his second goal of the season when he was able to put his shot past Rams goalkeeper Ezra Cassell. Classmate James Graf picked up his third assist of the year on the goal. Lehigh ended the half with a 1-0 lead and out shot the Rams 4-0.
The Mountain Hawks added two more goals midway through the second half, starting with Jim Taranto in the 63rd minute. It was the fourth goal of the season for Taranto, who is now second on the team with 13 points.
Vincent Devine picked up his third goal of the year, a little over a minute later, to give Lehigh a commanding 3-0 lead. Devine is tied for third on the team in goals with Patrick Cucci. The Brown and White out shot Philadelphia 10-3 in the second half and 14-3 for the game.
Freshman Jonathan Nydell earned his second win and second shutout of his career in net for the Mountain Hawks. While he did not face any shots on goal, Nydell did a nice job of cutting off the angles and forcing the Rams to shoot wide.
Lehigh returns to the pitch on Saturday night, as it hosts the Colgate Raiders in the final game of the regular season. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
