Mountain Hawks open season at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Lehigh opened its 2007-08 season on Saturday afternoon with both the Mountain Hawks men and women falling to host West Chester at Graham Natatorium. On the men’s side, Lehigh won four of 13 events, but fell 133-99, while the women were upended 145-83 after winning just three of 13 events.

 

Senior Clark Cohen led the Mountain Hawks to a top three sweep in both the one and three meter dives. Cohen scored 256.95 points to win the one meter and 244.35 to win the three meter. In both events, freshmen Willy Janquier and Alan Zaniewski finished second and third, respectively.

 

Junior Brian Curci led another 1-2-3 sweep for Lehigh in the 200 breaststroke. Curci touched the wall in 2:19.69 with classmate Dan Johnson and senior Dan Bennett taking second and third. Lehigh’s men also won the 400 free relay with senior Michael Hay, sophomore Ryan Guttormsen, freshman Matt Tax and Dan Johnson turning in a time of 3:17.12.

 

On the women’s side, freshman Lauren Kindrick won the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:43.27. Sophomore Stephanie Naylor led a sweep of the 200 yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:34.39. Naylor was followed by freshman Taylor Foxworth and sophomore Anne Rodriguez.

 

Lehigh also captured the 400 free relay on the women’s side, with Kindrick, Foxworth and sophomores Allison Rolish and Claire Winiarski putting in a time of 3:53.55.

 

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Sunday when they host Connecticut in their home opener. Diving action will get underway at 10:30 a.m. from Jacobs Pool, with swimming to follow at 12:30 p.m.
