Lehigh downs Holy Cross for first league win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh won its first Patriot League match in three years with a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross. The game scores were 30-27, 30-25 and 30-20. The Mountain Hawks improve to 4-11 (1-3), while the Crusaders record drops to 3-15 (0-4). Shannon Spafford led Lehigh offensively with 13 kills and a .409 attack percentage.
In the first game, Lehigh held onto the lead to secure the win, after allowing the Crusaders to sneak back into the game. Lehigh led 29-24 and allowed three points by Holy Cross before winning the game on a service error by Megan Merinder. Mo McReynolds led Lehigh to the victory in the first game, recording five kills and five digs. As a team Lehigh hit .231 in the game compared to just .088 for Holy Cross.
In the second game Lehigh took the lead with the 19th point and did not look back as they cruised to the 30-25 win. Spafford had five kills in the match while adding two service aces to help secure the win.
The Mountain Hawks did not show any signs of slowing down as they plowed through Holy Cross 30-20 in the final game. Spafford continued her dominance in the third game as she recorded five more kills and three digs.
As a team Lehigh hit .265 for the entire match, while the Crusaders hit just .064. Lehigh also had 43 kills compared to just 27 for the Crusaders.
Dannielle Pimental had a match high 15 digs and five blocks on the defensive end for the Mountain Hawks.
For Holy Cross, Christine Strawson was the only player with double digit kills, recording 11 and also a team high eight digs.
Lehigh returns to action tomorrow afternoon, when the Army Black Knights visit Taylor Gym at 4 p.m.
