EASTON, Pa.- The Mountain Hawks opened 2007 Patriot League play with a 1-0 loss to rival Lafayette Saturday night in Easton. The lone goal of the game was scored by Luke Sullivan in the 13th minute. The Mountain Hawks fall to 4-2-2 on the season, and 0-1 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards improve their record to 6-1-2 and 1-0 in Patriot League play. The loss snaps the Mountain Hawks six game unbeaten streak, and was their first regular season road loss since September of 2006.
The Leopards found the board early in the game, when Anthony Sepe’s throw in found the head of Sullivan. Sullivan was able to sneak the ball past a diving Brian Lee to pick up his second goal on the season.
Later in the first half, Lafayette almost made it 2-0, when Steve Ference sent a curving shot at the Lehigh net. Lee was able to get his outstretched hand on the ball, to make the diving stop and keep the game at 1-0.
The score remained at 1-0 going into halftime, with the Leopards out shooting Lehigh 7-2.
The Brown and White came out flying in the second half and almost tied the game on a Patrick Starsinic shot. The defender was able to put a great shot on net, however, Lafayette goalkeeper Philip Nelson knocked the ball away to keep the Leopards in the lead.
The Mountain Hawks would out shoot Lafayette 3-0 in the second half, but were just not able to capitalize on their chances, as they suffered their first conference loss since 2005.
Brain Lee stopped one shot in net for Lehigh, while his counterpart Philip Nelson also stopped one shot for Lafayette to earn the shutout. For Nelson it was his fifth straight shutout and sixth in the last seven games.
Lehigh returns to action on October 6, when it hosts the Navy Midshipman. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game can also be seen live on Lehighsports.com with streaming content provided by Yahoo! Sports.
