BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh remained unbeaten at home, and ran its unbeaten streak to five straight with a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. After failing to capitalize on several quality scoring opportunities, the Mountain Hawks received a 74th minute goal from freshman Danielle Fritz and the Lehigh defense clamped down to pitch its third shutout of the season.
With the win, Lehigh improves to 4-1-2 on the season, while Saint Joseph’s is now 2-4.
“It was frustrating at first for us to not be able to put chances away,” said head coach Manny Oudin. “We had a good amount of possession of the ball, and good flow. It was good to finally get the lead, and this time we were able to hold onto it.
The Mountain Hawks dominated statistically, out shooting Saint Joseph’s 29-11 and holding a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Lehigh had numerous chances to score in the first half, but couldn’t put the ball past Hawks keeper Megan Bastianelli. Senior Jen Fetsick had one of the best scoring chances in the opening half, but her sliding shot attempt glanced off the crossbar.
Fritz finally put the Brown and White in front with 16 minutes to play, blasting a shot from the center of the box on a perfect centering feed from senior Melissa Montalvo, for her first career goal.
Defensively, the Mountain Hawks limited Saint Joseph’s to eleven shots, just six of which were on goal. Junior Julie Kafka made two saves in the first half, and freshman Lauren Mains earned the win, stopping four shots in the second stanza.
Fetsick finished with a team-leading seven shots on the evening, while sophomore Liz Carlos and freshman Glynn Fitzer were credited with four shots apiece.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Sunday when they host La Salle. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
