BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Jen Fetsick scored her first goal of the season, and the Mountain Hawks held off a late Marist rally to defeat the Red Foxes 1-0 Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh out shot Marist 17-5 on the evening, but needed a last second, goal line save from sophomore defender Alex Warren to preserve the win and improve to 2-1 on the season.
“Give them (Marist) credit for keeping the pressure on,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We came out strong in the second half and were able to create chances to go up two or three to zero, but we were unable to finish and were very fortunate that they didn’t tie it.”
The game’s only goal came in the 23rd minute as Fetsick took a free kick from senior Michaela Pawlewicz on a bounce and headed it past Caitlin Nazarechuk for her tenth career goal.
Lehigh fired 17 shots on the evening, including five from senior Melissa Montalvo and four from sophomore Liz Carlos, but were unable to extend the lead. The Mountain Hawks also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
The Red Foxes did not record a shot on goal until the final seconds, when Warren knocked down Merrilynn Esteve’s desperation header off the goal line to preserve the shutout. Junior Julie Kafka and freshman Lauren Mains again split time in goal, but neither was credited with a save on the night.
“I’m happy with the clean sheet, and we certainly had a better defensive effort tonight,” added Oudin.
Nazarechuk finished with seven saves for Marist, as the Red Foxes fall to 1-1 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Sunday when they host Michigan State at 1 p.m on Youth Soccer Day. The game will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports. The contest will also be televised locally on Service Electric 2 Sports, Monday at 3 p.m.
