BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After falling behind early, Lehigh battled back versus Cornell but the Mountain Hawks were unable to get the game’s tying goal and fell to the Big Red 2-1 at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Friday evening. With the loss, the Mountain Hawks fall to 0-2 on the young season while Cornell goes to 1-0 with the season-opening victory.
Katlyn Donoghue scored the game’s first goal off of a penalty corner at the 32:22 mark of the first half. Abbi Horn and Natalie Appleton assisted on the Big Red’s lone score of the first half, which is how the game would remain heading into halftime.
The visitors upped their lead to 2-0 at the 39:01 mark of the game when Alyssa DePaola scored her first goal of the season. Lehigh cut the deficit in half when Kara Zweizig knocked in a rebound off of a penalty corner at the 44:33 mark and the Mountain Hawks had life. Lehigh had several opportunities down the stretch on the offensive end but was unable to get the tying goal.
Freshman Jess Miller had nine saves in 70 minutes of action in goal for the Brown and White, while Cornell goal keeper Shannon Prescott stopped seven shots of her own. Zweizig led the Mountain Hawks with three shots on the evening, while Kalynn Davies, Kelly Fox and Christy Smith were each credited with two apiece.
“We tried to take come things that were breakdowns last week (versus Temple) and we worked on them all week long,” head coach Julie Mazer said afterwards. “Our transition game was better than last week, but we need to take better care of the ball and there are a few other things that that we need to improve upon. Their (Cornell) scoring opportunities tonight were off of our turnovers, so looking ahead we need to get better on securing the ball.”
Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks head south to take on the Golden Rams of West Chester. Game time is set for 12:00.
