PHILADELPHIA- Lehigh faced off against Akron in its third game of the Temple Classic Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks lost the game 3-0, with game scores of 30-23, 30-26, and 30-16. In the second match, Lehigh won their first game of the season, but dropped the match to La Salle. The game scores were 30-16, 30-23, 21-30, and 30-26.
Shannon Spafford led the team offensively against Akron, converting nine of 16 kills, for a .438 attack percentage. She also contributed on all three of the team’s blocks. Freshman Dannielle Pimental had 17 of the team’s 33 digs.
The Zips had three players in double digit attacks, led by sophomore Brionna Patterson. Patterson also had a team best eleven digs, followed closely by Jenninfer Stewart with ten.
Against the Explorers, sophomore Mo McReynolds and Spafford combined for 23 of the team’s 45 kills. Pimental had another outstanding game, converting on four of her five kill attempts and recorded a team high 16 digs.
In a thrilling third game there were three lead changes, with the Brown and White eventually coming out on top 30-21. The Mountain Hawks converted a season best .370 of their kill attempts, while only committing two kill errors.
La Salle put in an all around team effort with three players in double digit kills, and three different players in double digit digs. Rachel Stemper led the team with 16 kills, while Amy McKeon contributed on six of the team’s blocks.
Head coach Jenny Maurer said of the team’s weekend at Temple, “We played some really great competition. I saw flashes of us really gelling as a team.”
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday September 1 at the Patriot Invitational. They will face Howard in the first game at 2:30 PM, and then host George Mason at 7:00 PM.
