Mountain Hawks upended by Crusaders

WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks fell to Holy Cross by a score of 17-4 at Hart Field. Freshman Inneke Carmola scored one goal and handed out an assist for the Brown and White, while Christy Smith, Tess McGrath and Christy Smith also scored goals as Lehigh falls to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in league action. The Crusaders improve to 10-4 overall and remain unbeaten in league play at 4-0.
Lehigh was credited with 19 shots on the afternoon, led by Pharaon’s five, while sophomore Sarah Fudin led the Mountain Hawks with three ground balls. Lehigh forced the Crusaders into 14 turnovers and were eight-of-nine on clear attempts for the game. Kelsy Ferris got the start in goal for Lehigh and sent back six shots in 47 minutes of action, while junior Seana Smith won three draw controls, caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.
The Crusaders jumped all over Lehigh from the start, taking a 10-0 lead in the first 20 minutes, before Christy Smith got the Mountain Hawks on the board for the first time at the 9:40 mark of the opening half. Holy Cross scored three more times before intermission however, and took a 13-1 lead into halftime.
McGrath scored the first goal of the second half with 27:49 remaining in the game as Lehigh drew to within 10-2, but the Crusaders scored three straight times to go in front 13-2 at the 21:19 mark. Carmola and Pharaon netted back-to-back goals at the 16:03 and 10:01 marks, respectively, to close out the Mountain Hawks scoring for the day. Patricia Sutton and Kristine Corkum both netted three goals apiece for the home team, while Sutton handed out three assists.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks open a three-game home stand, welcoming the Lions of Columbia to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:00.
