Mountain Hawks fall to American for second time

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Mountain Hawks’ second match against the five-time defending Patriot League champion American did not have a favorable outcome on Friday night as the Mountain Hawks were swept 3-0 at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. Game scores were 30-20, 30-26 and 30-19 in a match that only saw the Mountain Hawks hold the lead for one point in the first game.
American, 16-6 overall and 8-0 in the Patriot League, only faced one late game rally from Lehigh, 0-22 overall and 0-8 in league play. Late in the second game, the Mountain Hawks trailed American by as many seven points, but were able to close the gap and eventually come to within two points. The Eagles were able to increase their lead as they reeled off four points to make the score 27-22. After American and Lehigh traded points on the next two plays to make the score 28-23, the Mountain Hawks cut the deficit to three points. However, the Eagles scored its last couple of points to close out the game. The Mountain Hawks hit a .321 for the game—their best percentage of the match.
Freshman Sarah Wolfe put up a match-high 32 assists. Junior Shannon Spafford and freshman Brittany Thurston were the only players to record multiple blocks and they recorded four and two block assists, respectively. Senior Michelle Schwendenmann led the team with nine kills, while classmate Cassidy Maumus had six digs.
Rubena Sukaj was the only player to reach double-digits in kills as she recorded a match-high 16. Tara Stradling anchored the defense, coming up with a match-high 11 digs.
The Mountain Hawks return to the court Saturday night when they travel to Navy. Match time is set for 4:00 pm at Macdonough Hall.
