Day one complete at Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh returned to the courts for the first time in a month, opening up play at the two day Lehigh Tennis Invitational at the Lewis Tennis Center and Ulrich Varsity Courts. The Mountain Hawks are one of only three women’s teams in the field, so Lehigh was able to get matches in against visiting Southern Miss and Towson on Saturday and will do the same again on Sunday.

 

First thing Saturday morning, Lehigh’s top four singles players took on the top four from Southern Miss. The Eagles, by far the team traveling the furthest to attend this weekend’s event, won all four singles contests. The closest match was at first singles, where Lehigh senior Gwen Dwyer pushed Ali Blackett to a first set tiebreak before bowing out 7-6, 6-1.

 

Later in the day, the Mountain Hawks played eight singles matches and two doubles contests against Towson. Freshman Julie Arthofer and sophomore Victoria Vityuk earned an 8-2 win for the Brown and White. Lehigh held a 6-2 advantage in the six singles matches. Arthofer and Vityuk both won their singles matches, as did Dwyer, sophomore Ariela Cohen and senior Cessa Murasko-Blank.

 

There is no team scoring in the event, which will wrap up on Sunday, with Lehigh again playing matches against Southern Miss and Towson. Matches will get underway at 10:00 am from Lehigh’s Goodman Campus.
