Mountain Hawks open fall play at Cornell Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Lehigh men’s tennis team opened its fall season this weekend by competing in the Cornell Fall Invitational at the Reis tennis center. Six Mountain Hawks saw action in the three-day event with two members of the Brown and White earning singles wins and two doubles teams also earning victories.
The Mountain Hawks had two entries in each of the top three singles brackets. In flight A action, senior Alfredo Fernandez-Concha won his first round match 7-5, 6-2 over Zach Lerner of Amherst, before losing to a an opponent from Middlebury in round two. Fellow co-captain Ryan Lloyd went 0-2 at this flight.
In B singles, junior Brent Herbert and sophomore Andrew Balshi had a rough go, combining for four losses. Senior Evan Volkman went 0-2 in flight C singles, while sophomore Jon-Michael Caminiti earned a win by default before bowing out in the second round.
In doubles play, Lehigh’s co-captains had success picking up two victories to reach the semifinals in the top flight. Fernandez-Concha and Lloyd defeated teams from Amherst and Binghamton, before losing to a team from Middlebury. Balshi and Herbert teamed to go 0-2 in flight A, while Caminiti and Volkman teamed to go 1-2 in flight B doubles.
The Mountain Hawks will continue fall play next weekend when they host the ECAC Men’s Open South Championship, Saturday and Sunday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts.
