NEWARK, Del. – Lehigh wrapped up play at the Delaware Blue Hen Classic on Sunday afternoon, but the Mountain Hawks could not get past the host Fightin’ Blue Hens, who dealt Lehigh a 2-1 loss at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. Senior Daniela Molina scored for the sixth straight game, but the Mountain Hawks suffered their third straight one-goal defeat and fall to 2-4 on the season. Delaware remains undefeated at 5-0-1.
Neither team was able to get much going in a scoreless first half. Delaware did out-shoot Lehigh 5-0 in the opening 45 minutes.
The home team finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the 58th minute when Kasie Shover’s corner kick found the head of Emily Sammis, who beat Julie Kafka to give Delaware a 1-0 lead.
Like Friday night, Lehigh battled back to tie the game, this time in the 71st minute as Molina was able to slide the ball just over the goal line, following a scrum in front of the goal. Molina’s goal was her sixth in as many games and established a career high for goals in a season. Freshman Natalie Hojnacki earned her second assist of the season on the play.
Delaware nabbed the game winning goal four minutes later, as another corner kick deflected to Alli D”Amico who scored, with Shover notching her second assist of the day. The Fightin’ Blue Hens out shot Lehigh 15-6 and held a 7-3 advantage on corners. Both Delaware goals came off of corner kicks.
Sophomore Julie Kafka did her part to keep Lehigh in the game, with eight saves. Bonnie Mills turned aside three shots to earn the win for Delaware.
Lehigh’s current three match slide is the longest since the Mountain Hawks dropped four straight in 2003.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday September 15, when they welcome Monmouth to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:00 with audio and video coverage online at lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.
