Mountain Hawks reflect on season at Zell dinner

Posted: April 23, 2006

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh held its annual Charles ’38 and Helen Marie Zell women’s basketball dinner on Sunday, April 23 in the Asa Packer Room of the University Center. Three Lehigh players captured awards on the evening, in a program that included dinner, presentation of four awards, reflections from the program’s lone departing senior, and the viewing of a highlight film that looked back at the Mountain Hawks’ 2005-2006 season.

Senior captain Jenny Callan captured the Athlete of the Year award.  The Athlete of the Year award is presented to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team.  Callan led the Patriot League and ranked tenth nationally in rebounding, averaging 10.9 per game.  Her 15.4 points per game ranked second in the league.

Junior captain Sara Ellis was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Scholar-Athlete award goes to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. Ellis maintains a grade point average well over 3.6 as an industrial engineering major.  On the court, the Ohio native established a new all-time three point field goals made record at Lehigh, and surpassed the 1,000 point plateau.

Junior Adrienne Blount won the Coaches Award at the banquet. The Coaches Award is presented to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. Plagued by injuries through her first two seasons at Lehigh, a healthy Blount had a breakout season, garnering All-Patriot League second team honors.

The final award handed out on the evening was the Sixth Man Award.  This honor is bestowed upon an individual who makes a major impact upon the program.  The second annual Sixth Man Award was presented to longtime Athletics and basketball secretary Lisa Baker.
