BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh rode the arm of senior Kyle Collina and the hot bats of junior Matt McBride, senior Andrew Smith and freshman Mark Bernhard to sweep a Patriot League doubleheader from Lafayette (17-20 overall, 7-7 PL) on Sunday afternoon at the baseball field on the Goodman Campus. Collina went all seven innings in game one, to lead the Brown and White to a 6-0 victory, while McBride and Bernhard both had timely hits in the decisive seventh in game two, propelling Lehigh (21-22 overall, 10-4 Patriot League) to a 3-2 come from behind victory.
The wins keep the Mountain Hawks one game ahead of Bucknell atop the Patriot League standings.
In game one, Collina scattered seven hits through seven innings, striking out five hitters along the way, and walking only two. The senior picked up his fifth win of the season in the process, and received help from a five-run sixth by the Mountain Hawks to lead them to their 20th win of the season. In that sixth inning, Matt Geiger led off with a single and McBride followed with a single of his own. Smith then drove both runners in with a hit to centerfield, giving Lehigh a 3-0 edge. After an error by Lafayette, Smith headed to third and Nick Bet made his way to second base, bringing up Bernhard, who dropped a single into right field, plating both Mountain Hawks for a 5-0 lead.
Lehigh jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two in the second inning, when Smith, who reached on an error, scored on Bet’s single. The Leopards would score single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to go in front 2-1, but McBride quickly changed that, as the junior crushed a pitch well over the left field fence in the seventh to knot the score at two. Smith then doubled, bringing up Bernhard who singled to right field, driving in the eventual game-winning run.
Lehigh and Lafayette will be back in action on Monday afternoon with another doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 at the baseball field, located on the Goodman Campus.
