PHILADELPHIA –Great conditions and fast Lehigh boats made for an exciting day of racing on Saturday as Lehigh University defeated Drexel in five out of six races.  The men’s varsity eight raced the course in a time of 6:30.4 nearly six seconds ahead of Drexel.  Lehigh’s lineup was coxswain –Dave Highhill, Stroke seat-Matt Galuska, 7-Phil Bresnahan 6-Mark Chandler, 5-Chris Hause, 4-Sam Anderson, 3- Andrew Younghein, 2-Todd Mickelson, bow-Jon Winter.

Lehigh entered the novice eight “A” along with the JV8 in the second eight race.  The novice to first and JV8 third.  The winning boat was made up of coxswain –John Wertan, Stroke seat-Phil Snyder, 7-Kyle Miller, 6-Dave Kenyon, 5-John Young, 4-Joe Loquidouce, 3-Mike Jones, 2-Travis Kelly and bow-Dan Rogers.

The women’s side had the perfect day winning all three races.   The varsity eight won with a 10.9 second margin of victory over the lady Dragons.  Lehigh’s women’s varsity eight consisted of coxswain –Sarah Michaels, Stroke seat-Denise Julian, 7-Sara Brams-Miller, 6-Diana Philipovia, 5-Christine Pocaro, 4-Alix Howie, 3-Kaitlyn McCracken, 2-Emily Marshall, bow-Jackie Cross.  The Mountain Hawk’s second eight won by nine second and the closest race of the day was in the women’s third eights where Lehigh made a late charge in the last 500 meters to defeat Drexel by 3.2 seconds.

Following the success of the Drexel Duel, the Mountain Hawks stayed on the Schuylkill to face the Ivy League’s University of Pennsylvania men’s fours.  The first race featured two Lehigh Freshman fours and an UPenn freshman four.  Both Lehigh fours crossed the line first, defeating UPenn.  The final race of the day was a varsity four race between a single Lehigh and UPenn boat.  In this race, Lehigh was defeated by a charging UPenn four.

Look for the Mountain Hawks to take on two Patriot League teams this coming Saturday April 22 at Lehigh’s boathouse in Allentown.  The Mountain Hawks will defend their title of the River Cup against Lafayette while taking on a quick Army squad with guest U. Penn and Penn State.
