Mountain Hawks rally past Princeton, 2-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Lisa Sweeney and senior Kate Arico combined on a five-hitter as Lehigh erased an early deficit to down Princeton 2-1 Thursday at Kaufman Field. The win, the Mountain Hawks fifth straight, is the 20th of the year for the Brown and White, who defeated the Tigers for the first time since 2003 as they improve to 20-8 on the season. Princeton falls to 16-9 with the loss.
The Tigers raced to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as Amanda Erickson doubled to left, then scored on a double to centerfield by Calli Jo Varner.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lehigh plated two runs to take the lead for good. With one out, senior Mary Wieder lifted a fly ball to left, which Brianna Moreno misplayed into a two-base error. Junior Julie Sterrett followed with a triple over Moreno’s head to tie the game at one. The next batter, sophomore Megan Conrad, laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt, which Tigers pitcher Kristen Schaus threw errantly towards home plate, and Sterrett scored the go ahead run.
In the circle, Sweeney tossed the first four innings, allowing just one run on three hits. She earns her 13th win of the season. Arico then followed with three scoreless innings to notch her second save. Both Lehigh hurlers struck out four batters apiece on the afternoon.
Lehigh managed just four hits on the day, as Kate Marvel, Taryn Hanley and Wieder all delivered singles to go along with Sterrett’s three-bagger.
The Mountain Hawks will resume Patriot League play this weekend when they welcome Bucknell to Kaufman Field for four games in their league home opener. Lehigh will play two with the Bison on Saturday beginning at 1:00. Then on Sunday the two teams will play another twinbill, which gets underway at noon.
