WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Jenny Callan and junior Adrienne Blount scored 21 points apiece, but it was not enough as Lehigh fell to Holy Cross 72-65 Saturday afternoon in the Mountain Hawks’ regular season finale at the Hart Center. With the loss Lehigh wraps up the regular season with a 10-17 record and a 5-9 mark in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks will be the number six seed in next week’s Patriot League Tournament. Holy Cross improves to 13-13, 9-4 in league contests.
The first half belonged to the Crusaders, who shot a blistering 61 percent from the field, including seven of ten field goals from beyond the three point line. Holy Cross built a lead as high as 14 points in the half before taking a 42-30 lead into halftime. The 42 points were the most allowed by Lehigh in a first half this season.
Junior Sara Ellis did her best to keep Lehigh in the game, scoring 12 first half points on 5-for-9 shooting. Blount added nine first half points for the Mountain Hawks, who shot 38 percent from the field in the opening half. Kaitlin Foley had 12 points to lead Holy Cross.
The Mountain Hawks were able to claw their way back in the second half, largely thanks to the efforts of Blount and Callan, who combined for 28 points after halftime. A Blount jumper from the left baseline brought Lehigh within four, but the Brown and White could get no closer, as Holy Cross gets the win, and earns the right to co-host next weeks tournament as the number two seed.
“I’m disappointed with the defensive effort in the first half,” said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. “We gave them too many uncontested looks. In the second half we played better, but Holy Cross is a very good team and they showed it today.”
Callan added 11 rebounds for Lehigh, to collect her 17th double-double of the season. Blount added nine caroms for the Mountain Hawks. Ellis finished with 15 points and five assists for the Brown and White, who shot 44 percent from the field.
Foley led four Crusader players in double figures with 20 points. Holy Cross cooled down from the field after halftime, but still shot 51 percent for the game.
