– After opening the season with three games in Laramie
the Mountain Hawks returned home to Stabler Arena, but stumbled in their home opener Sunday afternoon falling 64-54 to Ivy League foe Princeton
. Junior Kyle Neptune scored a career-high 22 points on seven of nine shooting and added three rebounds in the loss for the Brown and White.
The loss drops Lehigh’s record to 1-3 on the season, while the Tigers even their record at 1-1.
“Kyle has really had a strong start to the season for us,” Head Coach Billy Taylor commented after the game. “He’s healthy now and playing well offensively and defensively.” He continued, “It was a combination of things today that cost us. We didn’t get the shots we really wanted and at times had trouble defending their offense.”
Lehigh would connect on just five of 20 field goals in the opening half, while Princeton shot 46 percent from the field and hit five of 11 shots from beyond the three-point arc, as the Tigers built a 12 point halftime lead and held the Mountain Hawks to just 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. Neptune paced the Mountain Hawks with five first half points.
In the second half, Lehigh tried to fight its way back into the game. The Mountain Hawks shot 71 percent from the floor after halftime including their only four three-pointers of the game. The Tigers, however built their lead to as many as 19 before Lehigh mounted a late run to close the final margin to ten. Junior Jose Olivero was the only other Mountain Hawk in double figures with 10. Sophomore Bryan White added eight points and eight rebounds for the Brown and White. Lehigh finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field.
Noah Savage led Princeton with 18 points while Luke Owings added 17 points and seven boards for the Tigers. The Mountain Hawks shot 44 percent from the field on the day, while Princeton hit on 51 percent. Lehigh was out rebounded 24-23 and had 14 turnovers to the Tigers 12.
