BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Five Lehigh players scored in double figures as the Mountain Hawks topped Brown by a 77-69 score at Stabler Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks improve to 1-1 overall; the Bears fall to 1-1 with the setback.
The Mountain Hawks came out strong, and built a six point first half lead thanks to some terrific shooting. Lehigh shot 46% from the floor in the first stanza, and connected on four three-pointers en route to a 33-27 halftime advantage.
Junior Emily Geosits led the way with nine first half points on three-of-five shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Adrienne Blount and Jenny Callan each scored eight points in the first half for Lehigh.
Meanwhile, the Mountain Hawks stifling defensive effort limited the Bears to just 28% field goal shooting in the first half of play.
In the second half, Lehigh increased its advantage to 16 points at 58-42 with 10:40 remaining with a pair of Claire Sullivan free throws. The Bears began to chip away at the Lehigh lead, and Brown drew to within three at 70-67 with 1:05 remaining.
The Mountain Hawks used timely free throw shooting down the stretch in ballooning the lead back to a comfortable margin in the game’s final moments.
Blount led Lehigh with 16 points, while Callan registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Claire Sullivan scored a career-high 14 points, including an impressive nine-of-ten from the free throw stripe.
Geosits was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, finishing with 15 points.
“Emily has done a great job for us in our first two games in taking some of the pressure off [Patriot League preseason player of the year] Sara [Ellis],” said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. “Emily worked hard in the off-season and has a lot of confidence in her shot from the outside.”
Sarah Hayes led Brown with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday, when the Mountain Hawks visit Princeton. Game time is set for 7:00 from Princeton, N.J. with live audio coverage on 91.3 FM WLVR and lehighsports.com getting underway at 6:45 with Steve Lomangino.
