BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh used a four-goal explosion in the second half to down Army on Saturday evening 4-1 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Down 1-0 at halftime, the Mountain Hawks staged a furious comeback behind two goals from senior Jim Stevens and a goal and two assists from fellow senior Adam Williamson.
With the win, the Mountain Hawks, tied for fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, improve to 7-2-1 and 3-1 in Patriot League action, while the Black Knights fall to 3-9-1 and 1-2 in league play.
Army got on the board first, stunning the crowd of almost 700 at Ulrich, as Chase Hunter scored off of a feed from Bill Watts, following a corner kick at the 35:10 mark. The 1-0 Black Knight lead would remain until halftime, which is when Lehigh head coach Dean Koski told the team that, “It’s a game of commitment, and we didn’t show that commitment in the first half.” Koski continued, “I told them that this game comes down to what we do in the final third, not the middle third, or the beginning of the second half.”
Lehigh heeded Koski’s advice and got the offense rolling. Stevens scored his fifth goal of the season off of a feed from Williamson to tie the game at one at the 49:31 mark. Sophomore Joe Clemente then executed a gorgeous give-and-go play with Williamson and deposited the ball in the back of the net for his first score of the season, lifting the Brown and White to a 2-1 lead at the 59:38 mark.
Stevens then added to the Lehigh lead when he scored his second goal of the evening off of a beautiful lead pass from Patrick Starsinic that Stevens blasted into the goal. With under 17 minutes remaining, the Mountain Hawks found themselves up 3-1. Williamson then got in on the scoring act, and Stevens repaid him for his earlier assists. “Willie” took a feed from Stevens, made a move and fired the ball past Army keeper John-Michael Gallogly for the 4-1 lead.
Koski offered more comments following the game. “We did a nice job of coming back from a goal down to a good Army team. Anytime you can score four goals in a half you have to be happy.”
Lehigh out shot the Black Knights 25-8 on the evening, and had five corner kicks to Army’s two. Sophomore Charlie Sales recorded three saves in net for the Brown and White, while Gallogly stopped seven Lehigh shots. Williamson led Lehigh with nine shots, while freshman Adam Gazda and Stevens each had three. Hunter led the Black Knights with four shots.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks welcome Adelphi to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is scheduled for 7:00.
