Lehigh hits jackpot in Atlantic City with two victories

Atlantic City, N.J. - The Lehigh men’s and women's rowing teams continued their streak of good fortune Saturday morning as they rowed against Drexel University and LaSalle University on the Intercostal waterway of Ventnor and Atlantic City. Each team entered two eights for both men and women.

The Mountain Hawk’s top women’s boat took first place overall, with the B boat placing 5th in the 4,300-meter race. The course and conditions were challenging with gusty winds, sheltered areas near the houses, three ninety degree turns, and two single lane bridges.

The top boat from Lehigh, which completed the course in 16 minutes, 59 seconds, finished 44 seconds ahead of LaSalle and 47 seconds ahead of Drexel’s top boat. Coxswain-Sarah Michaels, 8-Pam Lee, 7-Jackie Cross, 6-Denise Julian, 5-Sara Brams-Miller, 4-Diana Philipova, 3-Christine
Porcaro, 2-Kristin Bierbauer and 1-Li-Ping Chew were members of the Mountain Hawk boat that placed first overall.

The fifth place boat from Lehigh was: Coxswain-Debi Ou-Yang, 8-Christine Pacioretty, 7- Margaret O’Shea, 6- Danielle Iuliucci, 5-Angela Moudy, 4-Courtney Van Pelt, 3-Jin Hong, 2-Lauren Richter, 1-Kristina Nied.

The men’s race had Lehigh’s top boat defeating the Dragons of Drexel by 52 seconds and the Explorers of LaSalle by 58 seconds with a time of 14:25. The men’s top boat was made up of Coxswain-Dave Highhill, 8-Phil Bresnahan, 7-Matt Galuska, 6- Chris Hause, 5- Mark Chandler, 4- Andrew Younghein, 3-Jon Winter, 2-Nick Kruse and 1- Brian Drummond.

The fourth place boat from Lehigh was: Coxswain Kurt Schubert,8-Mike Flanagan, 7-Tim Matthews, 6-Dan Smeglin, 5-Travis Eisemann, 4-Mike Stern, 3-Jim Quigley, 2-Tom Dalton Combs, 1-Todd Mickelson

"We handled the difficult conditions fairly well and looked strong going into the last quarter of the race," said Lehigh head coach Paul Savell. "This is a great venue for coxswains to show their prowess."

 

Lehigh heads to Philadelphia this Saturday to race in the Navy Day Regatta. Start time is noon.
