SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team continued their good start of their 2005 fall season Saturday morning as it rowed against Patriot League rival Bucknell and Fordham on the Susquehanna River. The Mountain Hawk’s top women’s boat took second place overall, while a total of four Lehigh women’s boats competed in the 6,000-meter race.
The top boat from Lehigh, which completed the course in 23 minutes, 5 seconds, finished 37 seconds behind the overall winner from Fordham. Bucknell's top boat took third place in 23:21. Coxswain-Sarah Michaels, 8-Pam Lee, 7-Jackie Cross, 6-Denise Julian, 5-Sara Brams-Miller, 4-Diana Philipova, 3-Christine Porcaro, 2-Kristin Bierbauer and 1-Li-Ping Chew were members of the Mountain Hawk boat that placed second overall.
Three other Lehigh boats competed in the race and finished fifth, seventh and 9th in the 10-boat field.
The men’s race had Lehigh’s top boat defeating Bucknell by 76 seconds with a winning time of 20:34. The men’s top boat was made up of Coxswain-Dave Highhill, 8-Mike Flanagan, 7-Matt Galuska, 6-Phil Bresnahan, 5-Brian Drummond, 4-Chris Hause, 3-Mark Chandler, 2-Andrew
Younghein and 1-Todd Mickleson. Fordam’s men’s eight withdrew the event.
"I was very pleased with the way we raced today and the overall effort I saw out on the river," said Lehigh head coach Paul Savell. "There were some bring spots in the races that showed some real speed."
Lehigh returns to action when the Mountain Hawks head to Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday, October to race in the Shore Boys Invitational. There the Brown and White will face the University of Pennsylvania, LaSalle University and Drexel University. Start time is 10:30 AM.
