POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Mountain Hawks fought valiantly in Tuesday night’s non-league match against Marist, but ultimately fell to the Red Foxes 3-1 at McCann Center. Lehigh won game one and after dropping games two and three had game point in game four with a chance to force a deciding fifth game, but the Mountain Hawks could not close the deal and fall to 3-10 on the season. The Red Foxes improve to 5-10 with the victory.
After a sluggish start to game one, the Mountain Hawks offense began clicking as Lehigh overcame an early deficit to win the opening game 30-25. The Brown and White hit .265 in game one, their best hitting percentage of the four games.
Marist battled back and held off the Mountain Hawks in the next two games, winning game two 30-26 and game three 30-23. Lehigh fell behind early in game four, but the Mountain Hawks showed their resiliency battling back once again. Lehigh was down as much as six points at 25-19 but reeled off six points in a row to tie the game. A Michelle Schwendenmann kill gave the Mountain Hawks a game point at 29-27, but this time it was Marist rallying to tie once again. Scoring would go back and forth with neither team gaining the two point advantage needed to win the game but Christy Lukes’ block of a Schwendenmann attack gave Marist a 34-32 win and the match.
Schwendenmann led four Mountain Hawks in double figures with 16 kills and 12 digs, her second double-double in as many matches. Nikky Barnes also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Morgan Volkart and Shaina Jordan tallied 11 kills apiece, while on the defensive side Cassidy Maumus equaled Schwendenmann and Barnes with 12 digs.
Jamie Kenworthy led Marist with 19 kills. The Red Foxes hit .252 as a team, while the Mountain Hawks hit .195 for the match.
Lehigh returns to the court on Friday night as the Mountain Hawks resume Patriot League play against American. The match gets underway at 7:00 from Bender Arena in Washington.
