Lehigh opens fall slate at Cornell Fall Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – Lehigh opened up its fall schedule this past weekend at the Cornell Fall Invitational at the Reis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks hit some rough spots early on, but several Lehigh players were able to pick up a few victories through the consolation brackets.

 

The weekend’s best performance was turned in by senior captain Randall Smalley. After losing a tough three-set match to Binghamton’s Aurelio Martinez, Smalley battled through the consolation bracket winning three matches to win the consolation title at Flight A singles. Smalley defeated Michael Crooks of Stony Brook 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in his final match of the tournament.

 

In flight B singles action, Ryan Lloyd won his opening match in the main draw over Irfin Shamasdin of UMBC 6-3, 7-6(2) before losing to Cornell’s Joshua Goldstein.

 

The Mountain Hawks also picked up victories in the B Doubles consolation bracket. The teams of Andrew Balshi and Alfredo Fernandez-Concha as well as Lloyd and Brad Nelson battled back from early losses to pick up confidence-building victories.

 

Lehigh will be back in action this weekend as the Mountain Hawks head to Storrs, Connecticut for the UConn Invitational. The Mountain Hawks will look to repeat the success from last years tournament which saw them capture a singles title and both doubles titles.
