– Lehigh dropped a 3-1 decision to West Chester on Wednesday afternoon, in a game that saw the Mountain Hawks fall behind early, only to come back and tie the score late in the contest, before ultimately falling to the Golden Rams.
Senior Marissa Iannarone scored her first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Mountain Hawks fall to 1-4 on the season, while West Chester
improves to 3-2.
West Chester wasted little time in getting on the board, as Jenna Frankenfield scored just 34 seconds into the game, off of an assist from Megan Glielmi. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Golden Rams, until Iannarone scored her first goal of the season with just under 12 minutes remaining, off of a feed from Mary Beth Kuenne. With the score tied at one the two teams battled down the stretch until Shelly Brooke scored on a penalty stroke, beating Mountain Hawk goal keeper Meghan Gove to the upper right-hand corner with just 2:46 left in the contest. Frankenfield then scored her second goal of the day to seal the West Chester victory, this time on an assist from Mary Ellen Wells.
Gove finished with eight saves in the cage for Lehigh, while Golden Ram goal keeper Carrie Hanshue stopped eight shots of her own. Lehigh was out shot 11-9 on the afternoon, and had nine penalty corners to West Chester’s 11. Mary Beth Kuenne led the Brown and White with three shots for the game, while Iannarone and Christy Smith both unleashed two shots. Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer is now 2-1 all time versus her alma mater.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Hoyas of Georgetown. Game time is scheduled for 1:00.
