Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh continued to roll in Patriot League play, as the Mountain Hawks swept a doubleheader from Holy Cross at Kaufman Field.
In the opener, Lehigh senior captain Emily Ling hurled a three-hit shutout as the Mountain Hawks blanked the Crusaders 3-0.
In game two, it was junior Kate Arico in the pitcher’s circle, and she allowed just four hits in a 4-1 Lehigh triumph.
The doubleheader sweep improves Lehigh’s record to 24-6 overall and 10-0 in the Patriot League. The pair of setbacks drops the Crusaders to 7-14 overall and 3-7 in the league.
Behind another stellar effort from Ling, the Mountain Hawks picked up a 3-0 win in the opener. Ling (12-4) struck out nine Crusaders in the win.
In the third inning, freshman Taryn Hanley ripped an RBI double plating sophomore Whitney Schenbeck with the game’s first run. In the fifth, Kate Marvel drove home a run to make the score 2-0, and a Mary Wieder single drove home Jess Young with the third and final run of the game. Young was 2-for-3 at the plate in the win.
The nightcap featured more strong pitching from the Mountain Hawks. This time, it was Kate Arico (4-2) keeping the Crusaders’ bats in check. Arico scattered four hits in the complete game victory.
The Mountain Hawks got all four runs in the home half of the fourth. Third baseman Kelly Kliewer led off the inning with a double to start the rally. Leading 1-0, shortstop Mendy Martin delivered the big hit of the inning – a two-run double to make the score 3-0 Lehigh. Right fielder Katherine Wegert brought home pinch runner Julie Sterrett with the Mountain Hawks’ fourth run.
“Even in the wins today, we found ways we can get better,” said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan after the doubleheader sweep. “We need to do a better job communicating on the field, and that starts tomorrow.”
Lehigh returns to action on Sunday, with another doubleheader against the Crusaders. First pitch of game one is set for noon at Kaufman Field.
