Allentown, PA – Despite a driving rain and an extremely fast head current, the Lehigh crew team took on Lafayette in the River Cup Regatta on the Lehigh River, and the Mountain Hawks also met Penn State in a dual meet on the Lehigh River on Saturday afternoon. Against the Leopards, the Mountain Hawks captured two of four women’s races, while the Lehigh men were victorious in five of six races. In Lehigh’s showdown with the Nittany Lions, the Mountain Hawks women won three of five races while the Lehigh men won four of five against PSU.
In the River Cup Regatta, Lehigh’s varsity eight women finished in a time of 6:45 – a full 29 seconds ahead of the Lafayette varsity eight. Although the Leopards picked up a varsity four win by 18 seconds over the Mountain Hawks, Lehigh responded with a win in the light four (20 second victory), posting a time of 8:26.
On the men’s side, Lehigh bested the Leopards in five of six races. The Mountain Hawks’ rowers earned wins in the varsity eight, light eight, varsity “A” four, varsity “B” four, and in the novice four. The Leopards’ lone victory came in the light four – a slim one second margin.
In the dual with Penn State, Lehigh’s varsity eight women downed Penn State by twelve seconds in the 1850 meter race. The Mountain Hawks posted a time of 6:49. On the women’s side, Lehigh’s novice eight and novice four also posted victories over Penn State.
The Lehigh men also experienced great success over the Nittany Lions. The Mountain Hawks varsity eight “A” boat won the race with a time of 5:35 – 24 seconds in front of the Penn State varsity eight. The Lehigh varsity eight “B” squad was second with a time of 5:45, and Penn State finished third at 5:59. Lehigh’s novice eight, varsity four, and novice four were all winners on the afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 9, when Lehigh competes at the Husky Invite in Seattle, Wash.
