Lehigh tops Providence to win Bash at the Beach title

Georgetown, DE – Lehigh scored a run in the first and three more in the third and went on to defeat Providence 5-2 Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the rain-shortened Mizuno Bash at the Beach. With the win the Mountain Hawks finish a perfect 5-0 in the tournament and run their winning streak to nine games. The Brown and White are now 14-3 on the season with Patriot League play on the horizon.
The Mountain Hawks got on the board early as a Lauren Haney RBI single plated Taryn Hanley to put Lehigh up 1-0 in the first inning. The lead would grow to 4-0 after three innings, as Mendy Martin’s bases loaded single scored Julie Sterrett and then Whitney Schenbeck drove in two more with a double to left centerfield.
Lehigh tacked on a fifth run on a Jessica Young RBI double, which was plenty for starter Emily Ling. The senior went the distance allowing two runs on just seven hits while striking out three. She started three of Lehigh’s five tournament games, winning all three and also came out of the bullpen to beat La Salle on Saturday. With four wins, Ling was named the tournament’s outstanding pitcher as she improves her season record to 7-2.
Freshman Kate Marvel went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Mountain Hawks, who pounded out nine hits.
Lehigh returns to the diamond on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks will welcome Delaware to Kaufman Field for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one set for 2:00 for Lehigh’s 2005 home opener.
