St. Louis, MO
– It was an up and down day one for the Mountain Hawks at the 2005 NCAA Championships at Savvis Center
. Lehigh brought seven wrestlers to the tournament and by the end of the day three advanced on to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket while two Mountain Hawk grapplers saw their championships come to an end with two losses. A crowd of almost 16,000 saw the Brown and White go 3-2 in Thursday night’s second round, as their three highest seeds remain alive for national championships.
Cory Cooperman became the first Mountain Hawk to move through to the quarters, with a 7-1 decision over Juan Mora of Cal State Fullerton. The No. 4 seeded Cooperman now has a quarterfinal date with Michigan State’s No. 5 seed Nick Simmons.
Troy Letters continued defense of his national championship at 165 with a 10-1 major decision over Matt Palmer in a rematch of this year’s EIWA championship bout. Letters, the No. 1 seed will face No. 9 seed Travis Paulson of Iowa State in the quarters.
Jon Trenge became the third Mountain Hawk to advance, with an 11-3 major decision over David Dashiell of North Carolina. Wrestling without his trademark goggles, which were busted in his first round match in the morning, Trenge was in control throughout as he goes on to face eighth seeded Matt Delguyd of Northwestern in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Two Mountain Hawk grapplers fell in the second round and were relegated to the consolation bracket. Matt Ciasulli fell victim to the upset bug at 133 as Chad Mendes of Cal Poly scored two second period takedowns to win 6-4. The win was Mendes’ second over a seeded opponent as he moves on. Ciasulli will face Derek Moore of UC Davis in the consolation round. Travis Frick also will wrestle in the consolation round after suffering a tough 3-1 loss to Eric Hauan of Northern Iowa. Frick suffered a broken nose in the third period and after a five minute blood delay took the mat tied 1-1 in the third period. Frick took a shot with about 20 second left and missed; Hauan countered with a shot of his own and scored the decisive takedown in the waning seconds.
It was a rough day for Matt Anderson and Derek Zinck at 149 and 157 respectively. Both lost in the first round this morning, and after suffering tough losses in their first consolation bouts were eliminated from the tournament. Anderson got caught in a tough position and was pinned 46 seconds into his consolation bout with Cleveland State’s Ryan Hurley. Zinck matched up with Oklahoma State’s Kevin Ward for the third time this season, but the ninth seeded junior was unable to pick up his third win over the Cowboy grappler. Ward took a 7-4 decision and bounced Zinck from the tournament with a 0-2 record.
Overall, two time defending champ Oklahoma State has the most quarterfinalists, with eight, in all seven teams sent four or more wrestlers on the quarters. The Mountain Hawks are ninth in the team standings, with five wrestlers moving on to Friday action.
Action in Session III gets underway with the quarterfinals of the championship bracket kicking off at 10:00 am CST from Savvis Center. The quarters will be televised live on ESPNU, available on DirecTV channel 609.
SCENES FROM ST. LOUIS … Several Lehigh student-athletes were spotted cheering on the Mountain Hawks inside Savvis Center. All-American football tight end Adam Bergen made the trip to the Gateway City, as did wrestlers Andrew Rizzi and Mark McCauley. Tara Stottlemyer from the women’s soccer team was on hand as well, as her father Rande is the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh … On Friday afternoon, the NCAA will hold its Division I Championship 75th Anniversary Celebration at nearby Union Station downtown, including the unveiling of the much-anticipated 75th anniversary team.
