Mountain Hawks outlast Michigan State for first victory

Posted: February 26, 2005
Columbua, GA – Freshman Taryn Hanley doubled to center in the bottom of the eighth inning plating sophomore Whitney Schenbeck with the game’s only run as Lehigh earned its first victory of the season with a dramatic 1-0 win over Michigan State on Saturday afternoon at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.  Lehigh improves to 1-2 with the win, while the Spartans fall to 1-6.

In a classic pitchers duel, the two teams remained scoreless through seven and the game went in to extra frames.  After Emily Ling worked out of a jam in the top half of the inning, Lehigh scored the game winner as Hanley laced the double to center plating Schenbeck.

Heather Hamasaki struck out two over six scoreless innings for the Mountain Hawks.  Ling, who came on in relief in the seventh, pitched two scoreless frames to earn the win.

Freshman Kate Marvel was 3-for-4 at the plate for Lehigh in the win.  For the game, Lehigh scratched out five hits off Spartans pitching.

Lehigh returns to action later on Saturday afternoon as bracket play begins in the 24-team tournament.
