Lewisburg, PA – Senior Mary Frances Hynoski registered her fifth double-double of the season as Lehigh snapped a two-game losing streak with a 67-55 win over host Bucknell at Sojka Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
The victory improves Lehigh’s record to 15-7 overall and 7-2 in the Patriot League, while the Bison fall to 7-15 overall and 1-8 in league play.
“This was a critical game for us, and we knew Bucknell’s record was very deceptive,” said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan following the win. “This was a real gut-check for [us], and we knew coming in we needed to get this win.”
The Mountain Hawks came out strong in the first half, and hot shooting early helped Lehigh build an 11-point first half advantage. As the half wore on, the Bison defense tightened up and Bucknell cut the Lehigh lead to six – 29-23 – at the break.
Sara Ellis led all scorers in the first half, with ten points, while Hynoski added eight points and five rebounds for Lehigh. As a team, the Mountain Hawks shot 37% in the first half, and the Bison shot 36%. The first half difference was at the free throw line, where Lehigh was 7-of-9, and Bucknell was 1-of-1.
In the second half, the Bison briefly cut the lead to one point, before the Mountain Hawks pulled away down the stretch.
Playing in front of about 40 of her family members and friends, Hynoski finished with a game- and career-high 20 points, and the league’s leading rebounder grabbed ten boards for the double-double.
“This was a lot of fun, playing in front of such a big support group,” Hynoski told her local media contingent after the game, sporting her trademark grin. “Our team gave an amazing effort coming off those two losses, and we got a win we needed.”
Ellis added 17 points and Jessica DePalo added ten in the win. Hope Foster paced Bucknell with 14 points, eight rebounds, and six blocked shots.
With the win, Lehigh (7-2) remains two games in back of Holy Cross (9-0) in the Patriot League standings.
The Mountain Hawks return to the court on Friday night, when Lehigh plays host to Army at Stabler Arena. Game time is set for 7:00, and tickets may be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME or by logging on to the Lehigh web site at lehighsports.com.
