Lehigh upends No. 10 Oklahoma, will wrestle for 3rd place

OH – No. 5 Lehigh advanced to the third place match by topping No. 10 Oklahoma 29-14 in the consolation semifinals at the National Duals at the
CSU Convocation Center. The Mountain Hawks took six of 10 bouts to improve to 15-2 on the season, 3-1 at the National Duals. The Sooners are 10-3, 3-2 at the National Duals.
The teams opened up exchanging tech falls with Oklahoma’s top-ranked Sam Hazewinkle topping Andrew Rizzi, then Matt Ciasulli getting the five team points back against Trey Blakely.
In one of the marquee match-ups of the dual, Oklahoma’s No. 2 Teyon Ware used an escape and riding time to top Lehigh’s No. 4 Cory Cooperman 2-1 at 141 pounds. Lehigh then caught a break at 149, as the Sooners had to forfeit. Derek Zinck scored a 7-4 decision over Charles Jones to give the Mountain Hawks a 6 point lead at the halfway point.
Troy Letters extended the Lehigh lead at 165 as he picked up his third pin of the tournament, making quick work of Randy Sulaver. Travis Frick followed up Letters’ pin with a decision over E.K. Waldhaus.
The Sooners’ Justin Dyer stopped Lehigh’s four match win streak with a win over Dave Nakasone. After another Oklahoma forfeit at 197, Jake Hager scored a 7-3 decision over Lehigh’s Tom Curl at heavyweight.
The Mountain Hawks will next wrestle in the third place match against the winner of Minnesota and Central Michigan. Placement matches will get underway at 3:00 Sunday, including the championship match between No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 Illinois.
