– Brown built a 15-point second half lead, and Lehigh was unable to recover as the Mountain Hawks came up on the short end of a 69-61 score in the championship game of the Brown Classic at the Pizzitola Center
on Sunday afternoon.
The win runs the Bears’ record to 6-1 on the season, while Lehigh drops to 4-2 with the defeat.
Like Saturday’s contest against Bowling Green, the Lehigh-Brown tilt was a see-saw affair in the first 20 minutes. Eight lead changes were featured in a half in which the teams were nearly identical statistically. Brown had 19 rebounds to Lehigh’s 18, each team had four second chance points, and both squads had six points on the fast break.
Sara Ellis and Jessica DePalo each scored six points for Lehigh, who shot 41% from the floor. Sarah Hayes (12 points, 4 rebounds) and Holly Robertson (10 points, 4 rebounds, two blocks) did the bulk of scoring for the Bears, who shot 42% in the opening half.
Brown came out strong in the second half, and ran out to a 15-point lead. Lehigh went over six minutes without a field goal, as the Bears built the lead. The Mountain Hawks rallied down the stretch, but were ultimately unable to get over the hump. Lehigh trimmed the Brown lead to three, but could get no closer.
DePalo led Lehigh’s efforts with 15 points on the day. Jenny Callan and Sara Ellis added 12 each. DePalo and sophomore Adrienne Blount (nine points, four rebounds), were named to the all-tournament team.
Holly Robertson led all scorers with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks. Sarah Hayes added 20 points and four boards as well in the win.
Lehigh will now pause from its schedule for final exams before returning to the court on Saturday, December 18. On that night, the first-place Mountain Hawks will play host to the Binghamton Bearcats. Tip-off is set for 7:00 from Stabler Arena, and tickets to the game can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, or on-line at lehighsports.com.
