Mountain Hawks top Colgate, set season wins record

Bethlehem, PA – Sophomore Gina Lewandowski headed in Jocelyn Helwig’s cross in the 52nd minute and the Lehigh defense shut down the Patriot League’s highest scoring offense, defeating Colgate 1-0 on Senior Night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the win the Mountain Hawks set a new team record for wins in a season improving to
10-6-0 on the season, 4-2-0 in the Patriot League. Colgate falls to 9-6-1, 4-1-1 in the League.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with Lehigh holding a commanding 11-3 lead in shots at the break. In the second half, Helwig was able to find Lewandowski who headed the ball past Luisa Miller for her team leading tenth goal of the season. Helwig picked up her team best seventh assist of the year. Lehigh then had to withstand a late flurry from the Raiders. Daniela Molina made a key defensive play, sliding to block a point-blank shot from Franny Iacuzzi late in the match.
“That was a wonderful slide tackle,” said head coach Manny Oudin. “That type of effort saves games, and it did tonight.”
Erin Iwaskiewicz made four saves to record her Patriot League leading sixth shutout of the season.
Before the game the five Lehigh seniors were celebrated as the most successful class in the program’s thirteen year history. Iwaskiewicz, Helwig and fellow seniors Shannon Trexler, Jessica DiSabatino and Megan Plunkett, were honored for their four years of hard work before the match, and the team went out and sent them off with a win.
“We wanted to do it for the seniors,” said Lewandowski. “We were able to come out with a big win against Colgate.”
With the win, Lehigh inches closer to reaching the Patriot League Tournament for just the second time in team history. The Mountain Hawks are currently tied for second with American, with the top four teams making the postseason. Lehigh controls its own destiny; the Mountain Hawks can wrap up a berth in the Patriot League Tournament with a win over Holy Cross next Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch on Wednesday, for a non league match against Penn. Game time set for from Philadelphia.
