Easton, PA – Lehigh received goals from three different players, and senior Jocelyn Helwig added two assists as the Mountain Hawks stepped out on the road and blasted rival Lafayette by a 3-0 score at Metzgar Field on Monday evening.
The win improves Lehigh’s record to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League play.
For the Mountain Hawks, their ninth victory also ties a school record for most wins in a season.
With the defeat, the Leopards drop to 3-10 on the season and 0-5 against league opponents.
Lehigh got on the board in the 13th minute, when freshman Melissa Montalvo scored off a pretty feed from Helwig to make the score 1-0 in favor of Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks added a second score as freshman Jen Fetsick scored off a Helwig feed to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime. The helpers were Helwig’s fifth and sixth of the season.
In the second half, Lehigh iced the match as sophomore Gina Lewandowski scored on a rare penalty kick opportunity. The goal was her team-leading tenth of the season.
Lehigh was dominant from the get-go, out-shooting the Leopards 13-3 for the match. The Mountain Hawks had eight corners, while the Leopards didn’t have any. Senior captain Erin Iwaskiewicz played the entire 90 minutes in net, and she was credited with two saves. The shutout was her Patriot League-leading fifth of the season.
“It was a great showing out here tonight,” said Lehigh assistant coach Mary McVeigh following the win. “It’s always a battle when we play Lafayette, and it was nice to come out on top.”
The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch on Saturday for their home finale, as Lehigh plays host to first place Colgate in a pivotal Patriot League clash. Action gets underway at 7:00, and the action will be broadcast live on Lehigh’s web site at lehighsports.com.
