Bethlehem, PA – The Mountain Hawks were crowned champions of the 2004 Lehigh Soccer Classic after defeating
Saint Joseph’s 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the victory the Mountain Hawks finish the tournament with a 2-0 record and improve to 4-1-0 on the season. The Hawks fell to 1-6.
Lehigh would get on the board in the 11th minute when freshman Patrick Starsinic tapped home Adam Williamson’s cross for his 3rd goal of the season. The Mountain Hawks would take a 2-0 lead when Joe Clemente set up his brother Nick for a well timed strike past Saint Joseph’s keeper Chris DiStefano. John O’Reilly scored in the 41st minute and Lehigh led 3-0 at halftime. Jim Stevens closed out the scoring when he headed in a Kevin Deger cross in the 74th minute.
“We played well enough to score four against a young team,” said coach Dean Koski.
Senior Sam Bishop recorded one save for the Mountain Hawks who as a team have posted three consecutive shutouts. The Lehigh captain was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. Four Mountain Hawks joined Bishop on the All-Tournament Team: Joe Clemente, Patrick Starsinic, Adam Williamson and Joe Verdi.
In Sunday’s opening match, Jacksonville defeated Lafayette 3-2 in overtime.
Lehigh returns to the pitch Wednesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks visit Towson at 4:00.
