Gove's career best not enough as Lehigh falls

Posted: September 19, 2004

Bethlehem, PA – Junior goalkeeper Meghan Gove notched a career-high ten saves, but it wasn’t enough as Sacred Heart edged Lehigh by a 2-1 score at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.  The win improves the Pioneers to 4-4 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks drop to 4-5 in 2004.

After a scoreless first half, Sacred Heart jumped out in front at 45:58 when Jenn Howley scored to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.  Lehigh hung tough, and tied the contest at 1-1 as freshman Kelsey Smith found the back of the cage just over ten minutes later.  With overtime looming, the Pioneers scored on a late goal by Howley once again, propelling the visitors to the victory.

Overall, the Pioneers out-shot the Mountain Hawks 18-12, on the afternoon.  Lehigh had 12 penalty corners to Sacred Heart’s six.  In goal, Gove, making her second straight start, recorded ten stops while allowing just two scores.  Jeannie Ann Walls made seven saves in the cage for the Pioneers.

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, when the Mountain Hawks play host to Georgetown at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  That contest will get underway at 7:00.
