Bethlehem, PA - Freshman Melissa Montalvo scored five minutes into overtime to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 1-0 win over Stony Brook Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh improves to 2-1-0 on the season while Stony Brook falls to 1-1-0.
The teams played a physical, scoreless 90 minutes, with the Mountain Hawks having the better of the chances. Lehigh outshot the Seawolves 19-7, but had trouble capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
“We put some things together,” head coach Manny Oudin said. “We’ve got to start finishing, and take advantage of our opportunities.”
Senior goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz made seven saves to record the clean sheet, the best being a diving deflection of Kelly Bahnsen’s shot in the 77th minute.
A strange string of events led to the game winning goal in the extra session. Following a collision in the Seawolves’ penalty area a Stony Brook player went down with an injury. Play continued and Montalvo played a ball from just outside the penalty area past a confused Stony Brook defense and in for the game winner. Karilyn Anderson was credited with the assist, her third of the season.
“They stopped. We kept playing,” Oudin said. “I always tell them to keep playing until the whistle blows and that’s what we did.”
