Stony Brook, NY – Lehigh continues to improve with each passing game this season, but the Mountain Hawks just can’t seem to get that first win. On Saturday, the Mountain Hawks lost another tight contest, this time an 8-6 decision versus Stony Brook in New York. The game was a back and forth affair with Lehigh eventually coming up on the short end. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 0-6 on the season, while Stony Brook improves to 2-3.
Stony Brook jumped ahead with the early lead as Ryan Maehr found the back of net at the 10:43 mark off of an assist from Mike Kirschner and the Seawolves were ahead 1-0. Lehigh and Stony Brook then went about nine minutes with no offense until David Gaunt scored an unassisted goal with one minute to go in the first quarter and the game was tied at one.
Stephen Marino then netted a goal of his own with just four seconds to go in the first quarter and the Mountain Hawks were up 2-1 and looking good. Stony Brook then reeled off three goals of its own to surge into the lead at 4-2 at the 12:56 mark of the third, but Lehigh would not back down. The Mountain Hawks ripped three straight goals past Seawolves goalie Brendan Callahan, one by Greg Morin and two from Alec Hoof and Lehigh went back in front 5-4 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
But Stony Brook’s offense came to life and scored four straight goals and with 7:46 left in the game, the New York school was in front 8-5. Lehigh would add one final goal late by Andrew Lucas, but it wasn’t enough as the Seawolves prevailed. Hoof led the offensive charge for Lehigh with two goals and Marino, Lucas, Gaunt and Morin all scored once. Marino dished out a team high two assists on the day, while Mike Osborne and David Walsh added one helper each.
In goal for Lehigh, Tom Ellis stopped nine shots and kept Lehigh within striking distance all afternoon. Chip Freeman and Morin scooped up four groundballs apiece to lead the Mountain Hawks and Tom Weiss won ten faceoffs.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, March 27, when the Mountain Hawks travel to Lewisburg to take on Patriot League foe Bucknell. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00.
