Lehigh falls to Mount St. Mary's

Emmitsburg, MD – Lehigh was ahead 7-6 in the second half, but an offensive explosion of six goals by Mount St. Mary’s saw the Mountain Hawks fall in a tough 14-10 decision. Lehigh scored two late goals to pull within four, but could get no closer on the afternoon. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 1-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers improve to 1-1.
Amy Chamberlain got the offense started for Lehigh with a goal at the 27:48 mark of the first half, and the Mountain Hawk lead held up for nearly ten minutes until the Mount stormed ahead with two goals in four minutes. The Studdiford sisters, Emily and Ella, and Sara Starsoneck then connected on goals for Lehigh to up the lead to 4-2 and the brown and white was in control. However, the Mountaineers found the back of the net four more times before the half and Mount St. Mary’s went into halftime ahead 6-5.
Lehigh pulled in front early in the second half with two goals, but as they did all day, the Mountaineers came back with two more scores of their own. Mount St. Mary’s then poured it on, scoring seven straight goals to surge ahead 14-8 and put the game out of reach. Leading the offensive attack for Lehigh was Emily Studdiford, Starsoneck and Meredith Carso with two goals apiece. Barrie Cominsky, Sarah Starsoneck and Elaine King picked up the lone assists on the day for Lehigh. In goal for the Mountain Hawks, Vanessa Abbott faced 30 shots on the afternoon, turning back seven of them, while Kyle Begina saw four shots on the day and stopped one.
Mount St. Mary’s was led by Katie Simmons and Erin LaMotte with three goals each. The Mountaineers outshot Lehigh 34-30 on the afternoon, but the Mountain Hawks had 39 ground balls compared to the Mount’s 33. Lehigh returns to action on Thursday when the Mountain Hawks take on Drexel University in Philadelphia. That game is slated to begin at 3:30.
