Mountain Hawks clobber Chippewas for first road win

Ann Arbor, MI – The Mountain Hawks got victories from all of their big three wrestlers and saw freshman Matt Cassidy pull out another buzzer-beater Sunday, as Lehigh defeated Central Michigan for their first road victory of the season by a score of 25-9.
Mario Stuart set the tone at the start by scoring a first period takedown and riding more than usual ( time advantage) to win 4-2 over Kyle Stouffer. Jordan Webster then struck back by identical score in a tight battle at 133 which featured three reversals as the only scores. After a scoreless first, Matt Ciasulli rode tough for before the three switches of position.
In a meeting of two wrestlers with top-ten rankings at 141, No. 4 Jason Mester outlasted No. 9 Cory Cooperman 7-4 with a third period escape and a takedown with 0:48 left. Cooperman had reversed with three seconds left in the second period to draw within 4-3, but could not hold off Mester in the third period.
The Chippewas forfeited at 149, giving Matt Anderson his first varsity win the easy way. He had won Friday's two-bout wrestle-off with Tommy Rohn to earn today's starting berth, but was denied a chance to test his mettle. Derek Zinck then dominated at 157 with five takedowns and a two-point near fall over Ty Morgan.
Top-ranked Troy Letters faced his toughest test on the young season at 165 as he was forced into overtime by David Bolyard before shooting a firemen's carry to score the winning takedown. In regulation, Troy had two escapes surrounding a reversal by Bolyard. Brad Dillon (174) picked up a workmanlike 7-3 win over Mitch Hancock by scoring the only three takedowns. Then Travis Frick clinched the team's dual victory with the exact approach in winning, 7-3.
Matt Cassidy, no stranger to close matches this season, came away unscathed once again as he leap-frogged out to an escape with one second left in a 4-3 victory. All three of his dual wins this year have been by a single point. In the last match, Paul Weibel made his first appearance of the season and scored the first takedown at heavyweight against Bill Stouffer, but Stouffer eventually took over and won by a score of 9-4.
The win was especially impressive since the Mountain Hawk lineup featured four freshmen. Lehigh takes on No. 4 Michigan later on in the afternoon, and the match can be heard live on 1230/1160 WEEX as well as on Lehigh’s website at www.lehighsports.com.
