West Point, NY- The Mountain Hawks clinched a berth in the Patriot League tournament Saturday night with a 3-0 road victory over Army. Lehigh (17-12, 8-5) came into the night tied with Army (16-13, 7-6) for third place, but now own the tie-breaker and a one-game lead with only one league game left on the schedule.
Army made it as tough as possible on the Mountain Hawks, taking the first two games past thirty before losing 31-29 and 37-35. The 37 points is the most scored by Lehigh in a game so far this season. Lehigh was able to win the final game a little easier, taking it 30-23.
Freshman Michelle Schwendenmann had the best match of her young career, leading the way with a career-high 21 kills on the night. Jeannette Singleton had 17 kills and 16 digs as well, as these two really carried the offensive effort for the team the whole night.
“Jeannette and Michelle really stepped up tonight,” said head coach Patrick Nicholas. “They made the plays when we needed them, on side-outs and defensively. Army played us as tough as they could, and as close as all three games were, I am proud of the team for coming through with the win.”
Sara Fields led the way for Army with a match-high 23 kills. Army will also participate in the Patriot League tournament, thanks to Navy’s loss at Colgate on Saturday. Lehigh clinches their berth, and captures the third seed thanks to a season sweep over the Black Knights.
