Lehigh drops early lead and eventually game

Bethlehem, PA - Lehigh played spectacular soccer for two thirds of the game, but some great play from Navy and a little bad luck caused the Mountain Hawks to come up on the short end of a 2-1 decision at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Friday night. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 8-8 on the season, 1-4 in the Patriot League, and is eliminated from Patriot League Tourrnament contention, while the Midshipmen improve to 13-3-1 on the season, 4-1-0 in the league.
Lehigh got on the board first when a Navy player deflected the ball into the net just 1:30 into the game. The own goal gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead, which they would retain for the duration of the first half. Navy did manage to out shoot Lehigh five to two in the first half, but the stingy Mountain Hawk defense kept the Midshipmen off the score board.
The 1-0 lead would hold up, until the 83:20 mark, when Stacy Finley took a beautiful cross pass from Carmen Myers and found the back of the net to tie up the score. The game then seemed destined for overtime, but two Lehigh players got tangled with each other, which allowed Amelia Sheveland to score off a corner with just under four minutes remaining. The corner was fed by Finley and Lehigh quickly found itself down 2-1. Navy was able to play keep away for the remainder of the time and seize the victory.
Head Coach Manny Oudin gave Navy credit for the comeback, but would like to see his team come away with some good luck in one of these games. “Navy was able to come back, which is a testament to their conditioning and determination. But, it’s unfortunate that we lost another league game in such an unlucky fashion. I am happy with the effort we gave, even though we appeared to be a little tired at the end.” Oudin adds, “We were aware of their re-starts and how dangerous they can be, but things just didn’t go our way, it was a tough loss.”
Lehigh has little time to wonder what if, as the Mountain Hawks get right back to it on Sunday as they travel to Hamilton, NY, to take on the Raiders of Colgate. Game time is set for 1:00.
