Lehigh loses a heartbreaker to Fairfield

Bethlehem, PA - On senior day at the Ulrich Sports Complex, the Mountain Hawks started the game up beat and excited, but left the field completely deflated. Nicole Mazzocchi scored the game-winning goal at the 91:29 mark off an assist from Lauren Pizzi as Fairfield defeated Lehigh 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Lehigh to 6-10 on the season, and leaves the Mountain Hawks winless in the Patriot League at 0-4. The Stags improve their record to 5-11 on the season, and 1-2 in the league.
The Mountain Hawks had numerous opportunities in both overtime sessions, but could not find the correct seam to get passes or shots in to. When passes did make it through, the Mountain Hawks repeatedly shot wide of the goal. The frustration was capped off when Mazzocchi scored her goal. Lost in the aftremath of the game, was junior Jeanine Hoff and her stellar play in goal for Lehigh. Hoff played all 91 minutes and registered 14 saves, single handedly keeping Lehigh in it as she repeatedly turned back Fairfield shots.
The Stags had 22 shots on the afternoon, compared to Lehigh’s 10, and Fairfield had 19 penalty corners, 12 better than Lehigh. Sophomore Mary Beth Kuenne continued her aggressive play, leading the Mountain Hawks with four shots, and she received help from seniors Blaire Goodwin (3 shots), Kirsten Wyche (1 shot) and Jenna Walsh (1 shot).
Head Coach Julie Mazer, obviously upset over the loss, continues to stress that her team needs to capitalize on the chances that it is getting. “Even though we were out shot today, we still had our chances. In the overtime sessions, we had three or four times where we could have put in a goal, but it just did not happen.” Mazer continues, “I’m happy that we fought hard until the end, it is just an unfortunate way to have to end the game.”
Lehigh returns to action on next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Easton, to take on archrival Lafayette. Game time is slated for 1:00.
