Ann Arbor, MI-13th ranked Lehigh dropped their first dual of 2002, 16-21 to 4th ranked Michigan Friday night, in Cliff Keen Arena. The Brown and White are now 3-3 overall, and the Wolverines move to 3-0 on the season.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early 8-0 lead behind major decisions by two nationally ranked wrestlers, 2nd ranked Otto Olson at 174 and 4th ranked Andy Hrovat at 184. Olson overpowered Lehigh’s Brad Dillon 11-1. Hrovat defeated 11th ranked Rob Rohn 12-4. Hrovat now owns a 4-1 record over Rohn.
Jon Trenge, ranked 2nd in the nation, got things started for Lehigh recording the team’s first win. Trenge recorded a 10-7 decision over 9th ranked Kyle Smith at 197. Teammate Shawn Laughlin continued where Trenge left off. In the heavyweight match Laughlin recorded a 14-5 major decision over Michigan’s Aaron Walter, to up the Mountain Hawks score to seven.
At 125, 13th ranked A.J Grant squeaked by Lehigh’s Mario Stuart, defeating Stuart 4-3. Lehigh’s Dan Hyman was unable to upset 10th ranked Foley Dowd at 133. Dowd recorded an 8-5 decision over Hyman.
The Wolverine’s had no one to wrestle the Brown and White’s Tristan Boyd at 141. Boyd earned six team points for the forfeit and brought Lehigh within one point of Michigan.
The Wolverine’s pulled away once again after 8th ranked Mike Kulcyzcki earned a 10-3 decision over Lehigh’s 13th ranked Mike Pirozzola at 149.
