Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh ran out to a 12-0 lead just 4:05 into the contest, and then hung on for a 66-61 win over Princeton at Stabler Arena on Tuesday night. The win improves Lehigh’s record to 3-8 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 4-9.
Sophomore Jessica DePalo had a career night to lead Lehigh. She poured in 10 points and yanked down 12 boards in the first 20 minutes of play, as Lehigh took a 36-18 lead into halftime. DePalo finished the night with a career-best 14 points and 18 rebounds. Freshman Dawn Gorynski – named the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Week yesterday – continued to impress. She added 18 points, four steals, and three assists in the win. Gorynski was 3-of-3 from beyond the three point arc on the night.
In the second half, the Tigers made their push and closed the gap to 5, but could get no closer. Princeton never led all night. The Tigers’ Kelly Schaeffer scored 13 points in the second half (20 on the night) to lead the comeback effort. Freshman Rebecca Brown added 17 points and 6 rebounds for Princeton. The Tigers shot 43% from the floor on the night, and came away with 13 steals.
Meanwhile, Lehigh shot 48% from the floor, including 60% (6-of-10) from beyond the three-point arc. The Mountain Hawks turned the ball over 28 times in the game, but did manage 15 thefts. Lehigh controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Tigers 35-27. Junior Jana Ransom added 14 points and a career-high five assists in the win for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks open Patriot League play on Saturday, when Lehigh visits Navy. Game time is set for 1:00 from Annapolis.
